Initially designed with the intention of incorporating multiplayer features, reminiscent of Destiny‘s open-world environment where multiple players can roam together.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Carrie Patel (the director) revealed that Obsidian Entertainment marketed Avowed as a mix of Destiny and Skyrim to potential investors. This pitch ultimately resulted in Microsoft buying the studio. The development of Avowed began back in 2018 but went through two resets, causing Obsidian to abandon its multiplayer aspect.
In January 2021, during production preparation, leadership of the game Avowed was handed over from Avowed to Obsidian. This transition led to two significant changes in Avowed’s direction. Firstly, the narrative and lore were emphasized based on the Pillars of Eternity universe. Secondly, instead of a traditional open-world setting, open-zone environments similar to those found in The Outer Worlds by Obsidian were adopted. This shift was made to facilitate the creation of more unique and densely packed spaces within the game.
Instead of constructing expansive maps like Skyrim, our team decided to focus on smaller, thematically coherent ‘open zones’, as demonstrated by The Outer Worlds. This approach offers benefits such as allowing for more intentional and distinct area themes, as well as a clear sense of progression from one environment to the next, according to Patel’s explanation.
Patel added that the team is content with Avowed’s sales performance to date. However, she didn’t disclose what their upcoming project will be. What we do know is that Obsidian Entertainment is engaged in creating The Outer Worlds 2 at present. This sequel was initially unveiled in 2021, and a gameplay trailer was premiered at The Game Awards in 2024. The game is scheduled to launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S sometime this year.
Now accessible on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and Game Pass, the highly anticipated game known as Avowed has been released. In our review of TopMob’s Avowed, we noted that while the combat is impactful and satisfying, it is let down by an upgrade system that feels unevenly balanced and a storyline that fails to capitalize on its potential, remaining uninteresting.
