According to a recent report from Puck, it’s possible that Martin Scorsese’s film featuring Dwayne Johnson and Leonardo DiCaprio might bypass a traditional theater release.

Why might the Dwayne Johnson & Leonardo DiCaprio movie not be released in theaters?

Based on the most recent issue of our newsletter, speculation is high that the enigmatic movie may ultimately go to the highest bidder, potentially a streaming service. The newsletter hints that Netflix won’t be planning a large theater release if they acquire it, suggesting that the film could have a limited release if a streaming platform secures it instead.

Scorsese finds it less of a shift in rhythm for him. Unlike his 2023 movie Killers of the Flower Moon, which had a broad cinema launch, The Irishman (released in 2019) initially got a limited theater release before transitioning exclusively to Netflix’s streaming service.

At present, details about the upcoming movie remain scant, however, it is speculated that the film will center around a relentless Hawaiian gangster who is modeled after a true-life character. According to Deadline’s initial report on the project, the story unfolds during a tumultuous era in a tropical paradise, as an ambitious crime lord clashes with rival criminal groups in their bid for dominance over the underworld of the Hawaiian archipelago.

In the 1960s and 70s, this powerful and captivating criminal kingpin ascends to create Hawaii’s most dominant criminal dynasty. He engages in a brutal conflict against mainland corporations and competing gangs while struggling to protect his ancestral lands. The narrative is inspired by an unspoken true tale of a man who sought absolute power through relentless means, setting off the last significant American mob story. This struggle for power, however, unfolds not in the expected urban jungle, but in paradise itself.

It’s unclear at this point what size parts Johnson, DiCaprio, and Blunt will play in the upcoming film. They are all involved as producers along with Scorsese, Bilton, Dany Garcia, Lisa Frechette, and Rick Yorn on the project.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese have teamed up multiple times previously, with their latest project being the upcoming film “Killers of the Flower Moon” set for release in 2023. Emily Blunt appeared in the 2009 production of “The Young Victoria,” which Scorsese was a part of, while Dwayne Johnson is making his debut working with Scorsese on this new project.
