As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but share some exciting insights from Director Julius Onah regarding the initial portrayal of the Serpent Society in the recent Marvel Cinematic Universe film, “Captain America: Brave New World.
In American movie theaters right now, you can catch Captain America 4, or Captain America: A New World Order. This Marvel Studios production features Anthony Mackie once again stepping into the role of Sam Wilson/Captain America, while Harrison Ford takes on the character Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross/Red Hulk.
Discussing his role, Onah was questioned about the inclusion of Giancarlo Esposito’s character, Sidewinder, within the film production. In Marvel Comics, Sidewinder was known for establishing the Serpent Society, and there were rumors that additional members from this villainous group might be featured in the upcoming movie.
What did Captain America: Brave New World’s director say about the Serpent Society reshoots?
In this movie, we’ve chosen to maintain the earthy style and mood, similar to what you might have seen before I joined the project. The Serpent Society has always been a part of the story, and as you may know, they are depicted in comics with snake-themed costumes and abilities. In our interpretation for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we’ve explored both exaggerated and more subdued versions of these characters. We found that the grounded, less fantastical version better aligns with the film’s authenticity, even though it may lack some of the flashier elements from the comics.
According to Onah, having extra photographs taken, which had been planned right from the start, ultimately resulted in Esposito’s casting and allowed them to fine-tune the portrayal of the Serpent Society within the movie.
In his words, Onah emphasized the importance of respecting publishing while also ensuring the movie is true to its essence. He clarified that although it may not have been exactly as portrayed in the comics, it leaned closer to that style. As their work progressed, it became clear that a more realistic tone was preferred. To give examples, he mentioned films like “The Day of the Jackal” and “Point Blank,” which are procedural, paranoid, and political thrillers. He also envisioned The Serpent Society as being more relatable to our world, considering them as a private military company led by Sidewinder, who could be seen as a mix between a leader of such a group and a warlord. This concept evolved into something intriguing for him.
Marvel‘s Captain America: Brave New World is now playing in United States theaters.
