In Civilization 7, commanders are vital as they enable you to effectively control and strategically deploy your military units. Managing numerous units independently in extensive conflicts can swiftly become cumbersome without them. Each commander possesses distinct talents and skill sets, making it crucial to select appropriate upgrades early on. With an array of choices at your disposal, deciding which skills to prioritize can be challenging. This guide will assist you in selecting the optimal early-game promotions to keep your commanders – and your empire – ahead of the competition.
Fleet Commander – Weather Gage
The “Weather Gage” ability, found under the “Engagement” category, offers naval commanders the same strategic edge as the “Initiative” does for land forces. After deploying their ships, commanders can move and attack during the same turn, a feature that significantly enhances fleet positioning, whether it’s to attack enemy vessels or fortified coastal zones. Absent this skill, naval units may find themselves vulnerable before they can retaliate. Acquiring “Weather Gage” ensures your navy maintains its mobility and readiness for combat at all times.
Fleet Commander – Naval Artillery
In the “Assault” category, you’ll find Naval Firepower, which amplifies the battle power of naval units within the vicinity of the Fleet Commander. Particularly, ships targeting fortified districts gain a +5 boost to their Combat Strength. Given that many enemy capitals are fortified, this feature greatly enhances the efficiency of naval attacks. Moreover, powerful naval strikes also aid ground forces in seizing crucial cities. This Promotion is indispensable for any Fleet Commander engaged in offensive campaigns.
Army Commander – Rout
The “Rout” ability, falling under the red “Assault” category, enhances infantry units when they are attacking in close proximity to the Commander. These infantry units, who specialize in melee combat, receive a +2 boost to their Combat Strength while within the Commander’s influence. This enhancement can sway tight fights in your favor and is crucial for early-game promotions. To make the best use of this skill, carefully read unit descriptions as it only benefits melee-oriented units. In extended battles, Rout consistently offers an edge on the battlefield.
Army Commander – Initiative
The “Assault” category’s Initiative Feature grants units to advance immediately following deployment by the Commander, thereby skipping the standard delay that could expose them to danger during battle entry. By employing this Initiative, a Commander can swiftly transport forces to a location, deploy units, and initiate an attack on the same turn. This tactic ensures your troops strike first, reducing potential damage received. It’s a crucial ability for implementing a proactive and adaptable combat approach.
Fleet Commander – Warships
As a dedicated sea enthusiast, I’ve found that having my Fleet Commander stationed in coastal cities can really expedite the production of warships by an impressive 15%. This means fewer delays and quicker additions to my naval fleet during gameplay, which could otherwise take up to ten turns in the Modern Age. However, it’s important to note that this advantage only boosts production, not purchase costs. Consequently, it doesn’t affect towns where ships can only be bought rather than built. To get the most out of this perk, I always ensure my Fleet Commander is posted with my Warships in a city capable of producing naval units.
Army Commander – Mobility
In simpler terms, the ability called “Mobility” in the “Maneuver” section enhances a leader’s movement capacity by an extra tile every turn when they traverse land. It also enables seamless movement over challenging terrains like rivers and mountains without facing any setbacks while troops are being transported. This makes it particularly useful for commanders who frequently need to cover large distances on the battlefield. However, it is advisable not to prioritize this skill if you have a stationary commander, as they should instead focus on skills that improve city output.
It appears that the game is designed to make all commanders equally effective. Ultimately, the one that feels most comfortable for you to use will depend on your unique approach to playing.
