Why Fans Think Zack Snyder Is Returning to DC in James Gunn’s DCU

In a recent development, James Gunn, the CEO and Chairman of DC Studios, posted an image with renowned director Zack Snyder, causing quite a stir among fans. Speculation is rife about a possible collaboration between these two powerhouses, and whispers of the Snyderverse’s potential resurrection have begun to circulate. However, one must wonder if this latest photograph suggests that Snyder might re-enter the DC Universe? Here’s what we know so far.

Is Zack Snyder returning to restore the Snyderverse in James Gunn’s DCU?

Unfortunately, Snyder won’t be coming back to the DC Universe to rebuild the Snyderverse at this time. Additionally, it’s important to note that he has not been assigned to direct any upcoming DC movies yet.

Recently, Gunn posted a cheerful picture of him and Snyder (previously known as Twitter) that had everyone talking. The caption read, “It’s always great chatting with my pal ZackSnyder, an extraordinary director (and an exceptionally talented storyteller!).” This post ignited conversations among fans, who expressed their desire for these two to work together on a DCU project.

A significant number of fans have been advocating for Gunn to allow Snyder to direct a Batman film within his upcoming superhero universe, commending the director’s gritty storytelling in previous DC Universe films. Additionally, there are those who also voice their requests for restoring the Snyderverse. Beyond expectations for the DCU, some fans have even come up with movie concepts for potential collaborations between the two.

Zack Snyder first appeared in the DC universe back in 2013 with Man of Steel, starring Henry Cavill. Since then, audiences have appreciated his work for its accurate comic adaptations, dark storytelling, beautiful visuals, and confident direction. Unfortunately, he left the universe following a personal tragedy in 2017. This gap was filled by Joss Whedon who completed an unfinished Justice League project. After the film’s release, fans discovered that Snyder had a rough cut of Justice League, which led to widespread demand for its release through petitions and social media campaigns under the hashtag #SnyderCut. The campaign gained significant attention, and eventually, the studios agreed to release Zack Snyder’s Justice League in select theatres in 2021.

Presently, Gunn leads the latest DC cinematic universe. He directed the debut film in this universe, titled Superman, starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. This film is set to be released on July 11, 2025. Simultaneously, Snyder is engaged in creating a new Netflix movie centered around the Los Angeles police department.
