Paul McCartney to Sell Rare Beatlemania Photographs at Gagosian

A collection of previously undiscovered photographs by Paul McCartney is about to be displayed at Gagosian’s Beverly Hills location. This exhibition, titled “A Slice of Life during Beatlemania,” will feature thirty-six pieces captured between December 1963 and February 1964, some of which have never been seen before. The display offers an intimate peek into life during the peak of Beatlemania.

Interestingly, this exhibition coincides with the ongoing “Eyes of the Storm” tour, which has visited the Brooklyn Museum and London’s National Portrait Gallery. However, for this specific show, McCartney has partnered with the gallery to produce and sell signed limited-edition prints. A portion of the profits will be donated towards ongoing recovery and rebuilding initiatives in Southern California.

Just as their music resonated profoundly with countless people over generations, McCartney’s photographs on his 35mm Pentax camera had a similar impact. Following the success of the album With the Beatles and their initial U.K. tour, this show follows McCartney’s story as he navigated his path with bandmates John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr towards global fame. “As I look at these photos today, years after they were taken, I sense a certain innocence about them,” McCartney reminisced about the period. “Everything was fresh and new to us at that time. They evoke so many stories and a torrent of cherished memories, which is one of the many reasons why I value them deeply, and know they will forever ignite my creativity.

The photographs span from intimate self-portraits to energetic shots capturing enthusiastic crowds, mirroring McCartney’s abilities as both a musician and visual artist. They embody the impact of ’60s photography aesthetics and a hint of nostalgia. These images were taken in various locations such as Liverpool, London, Paris, New York, Washington DC, and Miami, offering a unique perspective on pop history from one of its key contributors.

The exhibition will be on view in Los Angeles from April 25 through June 21.
