Sifu Movie Update: Netflix Acquires Video Game Film, New Writer Set

Netflix has acquired the upcoming live-action movie adaptation of Sifu.

In December of 2022, it became public knowledge that Story Kitchen teamed up with Sloclap to transform the 2022 action video game, Sifu, into a full-length movie. At that point in time, Derek Kolstad was already on board for scriptwriting duties.

Since the last update on the project, it’s been revealed by Deadline that Netflix has secured the rights for the Sifu film.

Netflix has recently enlisted T.S. Nowlin for scriptwriting duties, but it’s uncertain whether Kolstad remains part of the ongoing project.

What else do we know about Netflix’s live-action Sifu movie?

As an ardent admirer, I’m thrilled to share that the mastermind behind John Wick, Chad Stahleski, along with his production house 87Eleven Entertainment, will be part of the filmmaking process! Joining him are Jason Spritz, Alex Young, Dimitri M. Johnson, and Mike Goldberg. At present, we’re eagerly awaiting news about who will direct this highly anticipated project.

In the game produced and released by Sloclap, I find myself immersed in a tale of vengeance set against the backdrop of contemporary China. The narrative follows the journey of a martial arts school’s disciple, seeking retribution for the murder of his master (Sifu). However, this game isn’t your typical revenge story. There’s a unique twist: thanks to a mystical amulet, every time I perish in battle, I miraculously come back to life. But, with each revival, I grow older at an accelerated pace. If I age too quickly, my demise will be permanent, and my mission will remain unfinished.

Timothy I. Stevenson, Elena Sandoval, Jeff Ludwig, Jordan Layani, and Pierre Tarno are appointed as the production team in a leadership role.

Troy Nowlin has been involved in the screenwriting of several films including “The Maze Runner” (2014), “Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” (2015), “Phoenix Forgotten” (2017), “Maze Runner: The Death Cure” and “Pacific Rim Uprising” (both in 2018), and most recently, “The Adam Project” (2022). Additionally, he has served as an executive producer for all the Maze Runner movies, as well as for the 2014 movie titled “Never”.

A release date for Netflix’s Sifu movie has not yet been announced.
