Netflix seemingly has big plans for its Chronicles of Narnia movies.
In July 2023, it became public knowledge that Greta Gerwig, who had been tasked with writing and directing at least two films based on C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia for Netflix, had been appointed. Later, in January 2025, it was disclosed that her initial Narnia movie would receive a special two-week IMAX screening.
Based on public interest, the IMAX screening duration might be prolonged. Additionally, a standard cinema release (not IMAX) is under consideration prior to the film’s debut on Netflix streaming platform.
How many Chronicles of Narnia movies are planned?
According to the latest financial reports, IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond stated that Netflix intends to produce eight adaptations of The Chronicles of Narnia.
Gelfond stated that this film was excellent for us, as he believes it could be part of up to eight movies in a series. Imax excels at kickstarting franchises and large-scale events, and this particular movie seems perfect for an Imax premiere.
As a gamer immersed in the magical world of Narnia, I’ve journeyed through seven epic tales penned by Lewis: “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” from 1950, “Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia,” published in 1951, “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” from 1952, “The Silver Chair” that came out in 1953, “The Horse and His Boy” from 1954, “The Magician’s Nephew” which graced us in 1955, and finally, “The Last Battle,” a story released in 1956.
This implies that Netflix has a rich collection of content to choose from regarding Greta Gerwig’s first Narnia film, but it remains uncertain whether her movie will be based on “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” or “The Magician’s Nephew,” which functions as a prequel and delves into the beginnings of Narnia.
No casting for Netflix’s Chronicles of Narnia movies has been announced at this time.
In 2026, on Thanksgiving Day, Gerwig’s Chronicles of Narnia will hit the big screens in IMAX theaters. Later, it will be available for streaming on Netflix on Christmas of that very same year.
