As a gamer, I need to take action and download any Highlights and Uploads that I wish to keep, as Twitch is about to implement a storage limit. If I have more than 100 hours of content with less views, it will be automatically deleted until my channel’s media falls within the new storage limit.
Beginning April 19, 2025, Twitch plans to set a storage limit for Highlights and Uploads at 100 hours per channel starting from that date. This change is expected to affect fewer than half a percent of active streamers on the platform. The rollout will involve removing older videos until each channel conforms to this limit. Once the limit is reached, users will no longer be able to upload more videos. Twitch intends to prioritize deleting videos with the fewest views initially.
To aid in the transition process, Twitch is introducing a fresh storage tracker on the Video Producer page. This will allow users to monitor their usage of storage for Highlights and Uploads. They can sort these by the date they were created, length, or view count for easier management. It’s important to note that this revised limit does not affect Past Broadcasts (VODs) or Clips stored on Twitch.
Initially, we introduced Highlights as a tool for streamers to compile their top moments and attract new viewers on Twitch. However, it has been found that Highlights are less successful in promoting discovery or viewer engagement compared to other features such as Clips, Tags, and the Mobile Discovery Feed. Surprisingly, some users have accumulated vast amounts of time spent on Highlights and Uploads (which are often turned into Highlights) over a period of time.
Amazon, which owns Twitch, reported a 19% increase in revenue from its Amazon Web Services, amounting to $27.5 billion dollars compared to the previous year. This suggests that the company has no shortage of funds. However, there’s been a significant response from the community regarding a recent decision, so it remains to be seen if Amazon will stand firm on this matter.
