The forthcoming movie titled “The Monkey” by Neon is inspired by a 1980 short story penned by Stephen King, with certain adjustments being made. However, one alteration was necessitated due to copyright issues involving Disney.
What did Osgood Perkins say about The Monkey’s change?
In an interview with SFX Magazine (through Games Radar), director Osgood Perkins disclosed that while making The Monkey, he found out that Disney actually held the rights to the original appearance of the monkey, which was based on a wind-up toy resembling a doll that produced cymbal sounds.
Because the character from Toy Story 3 made an appearance, it became necessary for Perkins to design a new aesthetic for the main antagonist.
In the task presented to him, Perkins was informed by the producer that since Disney owned the cymbals (due to the toy monkey in Toy Story), they couldn’t be used. This limitation sparked an idea for Perkins. Instead of using cymbals, he wondered if a drum would work instead. He explained that when faced with limitations, it’s important to embrace the saying “necessity is the mother of invention” – otherwise, one could find themselves in trouble. Delighted by this unexpected opportunity, Perkins exclaimed, “This is great! The drum is better!” He described the drum as a marching drum, adding an element of anticipation with his phrase, “Drum roll, please!” before something happens. This was preferable to him compared to using cymbals, so he expressed gratitude towards Disney for this turn of events.
The Monkey will be released in United States theaters on February 21, 2025, from Neon.
In the movie titled “The Monkey,” twin siblings Hal and Bill stumble upon their father’s forgotten monkey figurine in the attic, which triggers a chain of terrifying deaths. According to Deadline, the narrative goes on to describe how they discard the monkey and drift apart over time. However, as the strange deaths recur, the brothers are compelled to reunite and devise a plan to permanently eliminate the monkey before it claims more lives of their loved ones.
