In a twist worthy of a Moscow novel, Fluent Labs has managed to snag a cool $8 million in funding, courtesy of the ever-mysterious Polychain Capital. Their grand ambition? To concoct the first blended execution network in the chaotic realm of blockchain. It seems they’ve taken it upon themselves to tackle a rather pesky dilemma that has been plaguing developers: the stifling and oh-so-limited environments of the existing virtual machines (VMs). Who knew coding could feel like being trapped in a Dostoevsky novel?
In a recent proclamation on X, the platform lamented the current state of blockchain development, where one must choose between the likes of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) or the Solana Virtual Machine (SVM). Each comes with its own set of delightful constraints. EVM chains demand the use of Solidity, while SVM chains insist on Rust. And while Rust may be the efficient darling of the programming world, it lacks the widespread adoration that Ethereum enjoys, leaving developers to make the kind of trade-offs that would make even a seasoned negotiator weep.
But wait, there’s more! These environments are not exactly welcoming to the familiar programming languages and tools that developers have grown to love in the traditional Web2 world. This unfortunate limitation stifles innovation and slows down development, as if the developers were trying to run a marathon in a pair of ill-fitting shoes. Who needs existing software libraries and pre-built code when you can struggle in isolation?
Blended Execution: The Cross-VM Compatibility We Never Knew We Needed
Enter Fluent Labs, the self-proclaimed savior of the blockchain universe, ready to shatter this paradigm with their blended execution model. Developers can now frolic across multiple VMs in a unified environment, integrating EVM, SVM, and Wasm like a master chef blending flavors in a borscht. This newfound flexibility allows them to wield programming languages like Rust, Solidity, AssemblyScript, and C++—a veritable buffet of options without the pesky worry of compatibility issues. The team boldly declared:
“The Fluent blockchain blends the EVM, SVM, and Wasm, enabling dozens of programming languages like Rust, AssemblyScript, C++, etc. while maintaining compatibility with Ethereum and Solana standards.”
Our intrepid co-founder and CEO, Dino, has grand visions of a world where users can seamlessly navigate apps across different blockchains without the hassle of wallet-switching. Fluent Labs is on a mission to enhance performance and trim costs, all while juggling multiple virtual machine systems. He shared his dreams with The Block:
“Imagine a decentralized exchange, written in Solidity like Uniswap, that can support Solana SPL tokens, allowing users to swap ERC-20 tokens for SPL tokens. Or a user being able to do a flash loan requiring atomic composability between ERC-20s and SPL tokens. These two use cases, along with many others, can exist with blended execution.”
Luke Pearson from Polychain Capital chimed in, noting that the current blockchain environments are as constrained as a character in a tragic play. He added that Fluent is designed to be more flexible, allowing developers to use the best tools without the looming specter of compatibility issues. How refreshing!
Expanding the Fluent Ecosystem: A Funding Bonanza!
The Fluent ecosystem is already blossoming, with around 60 projects sprouting across DeFi, infrastructure, consumer applications, and gaming. Upcoming applications include a fully on-chain quant trading system and a Web3-native Product Hunt, among other delightful surprises. Who knew blockchain could be so… productive?
Fluent Labs envisions a world where blockchain complexity is simplified, allowing users to experience applications seamlessly without needing to decipher the cryptic protocols lurking beneath the surface. A noble goal, indeed!
The funding round attracted a veritable who’s who of the investment world, with participation from leading companies such as dao5, Symbolic Capital, Primitive, Builder Capital, Public Works, and Nomad Capital. Notable investors like Balaji Srinivasan, Mustafa Al-Bassam, Jason Yanowitz, Santiago Santos, Dingaling, Cristian Manea, and Will Price also joined the fray. It’s a party, and everyone’s invited!
