The Defenders MCU Return Being Explored, According to Head of Marvel TV

According to the head of Marvel TV, it’s possible that the other members of Netflix’s The Defenders, such as Daredevil, might join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in the future.

What do we know about a potential The Defenders MCU return?

When Entertainment Weekly questioned Brad Winderbaum, head of Marvel TV, about the forthcoming Daredevil: Born Again series on Disney+, he was asked if there were any intentions to revive characters such as Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones, Mike Colter’s Luke Cage, or Finn Jones’ Iron Fist – who formed The Defenders in the original Netflix show – similar to how Daredevil was brought back.

As a fervent admirer, I can tell you that Winderbaum didn’t make any solid promises, but he did express Marvel TV’s eagerness to dive into the captivating universe of the Netflix shows, likening it to a playground, or a “sandbox.” Moreover, he hinted at the challenges they face due to certain restrictions, but emphasized that they’ve carefully considered these limitations and are actively investigating ways to navigate them, referring to these constraints as “variables” and their exploration as “very much exploring” the possibilities.

Winderbaum replies with a hint of secrecy: “I can’t reveal too much, but trust me when I say that working in this ‘sandbox’ is nothing short of thrilling.” He goes on to explain the challenges they face compared to creating a comic book, such as dealing with actors, time constraints, and massive production for both film and television. However, he emphasizes that despite these difficulties, it remains creatively very stimulating and they are eagerly delving into this project.

In 2017, “The Defenders” made its debut on Netflix, introducing a team consisting of characters from different Marvel projects available on the streaming service. The storyline unfolded after the second season of Daredevil, focusing on Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist uniting in New York City to confront the Hand.

It’s uncertain if any cast members from other Netflix shows will be involved, but several appear eager and prepared to join. Krysten Ritter, who portrayed Jessica Jones, expressed her readiness to return to the role in December, even playfully urging Winderbaum to initiate the process.

During an interview, Ritter responded enthusiastically when told that Brad Winderbaum wanted Jones to return. “Wow, great news!” he exclaimed. “Aren’t you the one who makes the call?” Ritter then urged Brad, saying, “Alright, let’s get started! Let’s make it happen. I’m ready!
