Magic: The Gathering X Final Fantasy – Release Date And Everything Else You Need To Know

This collection is one of several epic collaborations in Wizards of the Coast’s Universes Beyond lineup, alongside notable series like Fallout and Assassin’s Creed. What sets this partnership apart, though, is a revolutionary shift within the franchise.

A New Chapter for Universes Beyond

In contrast to its predecessor sets, “Magic: The Gathering – Final Fantasy” is the inaugural Universes Beyond set that’s Standard-legal. This implies it’s not only suitable for casual play, but it’s also eligible for competitive matches. Moreover, this set is entirely draftable, allowing players to construct decks and participate in booster draft formats, which were not feasible with previous Universities Beyond releases. The set will highlight characters and themes from all 16 mainline editions of the Final Fantasy series. Although the entire scope of the set hasn’t been disclosed yet, Wizards of the Coast has already displayed early concept cards, offering a sneak peek at what fans might anticipate.

First Look at the Cards – A Tribute to Final Fantasy’s Legacy

So far, just a few cards have been unveiled, among them is an exceptionally potent card that might significantly alter the game dynamics. As we count down to a wider disclosure, initial glimpses hint at a loyal recreation of Final Fantasy’s distinctive mechanics and cherished characters within the Magic: The Gathering universe.

Wizards of the Coast unveiled four pre-built Commander decks inspired by some of Final Fantasy’s most famous games, with each deck featuring a strategically selected Commander and card selections that embody the storylines and mechanics of their respective titles.

Scions and Spellcraft (Final Fantasy XIV)

If you’re a fan of Final Fantasy XIV, the Scions and Spellcraft deck is all about spell casting and tactical mastery. This deck is led by Y’shtola, Night’s Blessed, who represents a blend of Blue’s card superiority, White’s control aspects, and Black’s smart resource allocation. With Y’shtola, when you cast non-creature spells, she retaliates by dealing two damage to all opponents while healing herself by the same amount. Furthermore, dishing out four direct damages during a single turn gives you an extra card draw, emphasizing the strategy of using non-creature spells for long-term benefits.

Hello there! We can’t wait to introduce you to some of the cards and artwork inspired by the 16 core games of the iconic FINAL FANTASY series! Enjoy the journey!

Revival Trance (Final Fantasy VI)

Fans of Final Fantasy VI can explore Revival Trance, a deck themed around Terra, the Embodiment of Hope, which has a distinct Mardu color identity. This deck emphasizes mechanics related to graveyards, skillfully blending Red/Black’s discard and milling effects with White’s capability to reuse cards from the graveyard. Terra’s unique ability allows her to bring back creatures with three or fewer power whenever she inflicts combat damage. Furthermore, at the start of each turn, she remains in play, automatically sending two cards from the top of your deck to the graveyard, providing a plentiful choice for resurrection opportunities. Her ability to gain flying also helps guarantee that her resurrection triggers are successful.

Counter Blitz (Final Fantasy X)

This Counter Blitz deck, similar to the sport from Final Fantasy X called Blitzball, is centered around managing counters and creating strategic connections on the battlefield. Tidus, acting as Yuna’s protector, heads this multi-colored (Bant) deck, focusing on distributing counters effectively. Tidus facilitates the transfer of counters between creatures while also offering card drawing when direct damage is inflicted. Moreover, this deck takes advantage of proliferation mechanics, increasing the number of counters on creatures by two, making it an appealing choice for players who like accumulating advantages over time and watching them grow.

All primary Final Fantasy games will be featured in MTG x FINAL FANTASY, providing a premium launch experience reminiscent of main events. Expect to play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Commander decks, and more! Save the date: June 13th, 2025.

Limit Break (Final Fantasy VII)

As a hardcore Final Fantasy VII fan, it was only a matter of time before I found myself drawn to a deck themed around this iconic RPG. Limit Break, my go-to choice, perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the game. With Cloud, the former SOLDIER, leading the charge in Naya colors, this deck is all about gear and power boosts. The synergy between Red/White’s equipment and Green’s stat buffing makes Limit Break a strategy that rewards players for building formidable, well-equipped creatures.

Upon hitting the battlefield, Cloud gets an instant upgrade at no cost to me, and his presence also triggers card draw when he’s surrounded by properly equipped companions. And let’s not forget about Treasure Tokens – they help keep those expensive equipment mechanics running smoothly.

The #MTGxFINALFANTASY Beginner’s Set is an ideal starting place for Final Fantasy enthusiasts to delve into the world of Magic! Inside, you’ll find Cloud, Champion of the Planet and Sephiroth, Heir of the Planet, ready for battle in two pre-assembled decks.

MTG X Final Fantasy Starter Kit: Cloud vs. Sephiroth

If you’re a beginner to Magic: The Gathering or prefer a simplified gameplay style, the MTG X Final Fantasy Starter Kit is perfect for you. This kit comes with two ready-made decks tailored for direct combat. The Boros (Red/White) deck, guided by Cloud, the Champion of the Planet, follows an attack-oriented strategy using equipment, reflecting his combative abilities in Final Fantasy VII. Conversely, the Dimir (Blue/Black) deck, under the command of Sephiroth, the Heir of the Planet, emphasizes control tactics, growing stronger as it eliminates enemy creatures from the battlefield. Experienced players may also find this Starter Kit intriguing, offering a chance to reenact the legendary rivalry between Cloud and Sephiroth in a fresh gameplay setting.

The upcoming release of Magic: The Gathering – Final Fantasy on June 13, 2025 is generating a lot of excitement as it’s expected to be a groundbreaking crossover. With its status as a Standard set, ability for drafting, and the variety of Commander decks, fans from both universes have much to anticipate. Regardless if you’re an experienced Magic: The Gathering player or a passionate Final Fantasy fan dipping into tabletop strategy for the first time, there’s something appealing in this set for everyone.
