Since its debut in July 2024, The First Descendant has been a blast to play and the developers have shown commendable attentiveness to fan feedback, consistently refining the game. Yet, despite this impressive level of support and interaction, there’s been a staggering 95% decrease in player numbers. While fans of TFD can rest assured that the game isn’t being neglected, Nexon has expressed concern as The First Descendant is “not meeting expectations” due to issues with player retention.
The First Descendant is performing “below expectations”
On February 13th, Nexon unveiled their Quarter 4 and Full-Year 2024 Earnings Report. This report offers insights into the status of all Intellectual Properties they manage. It was a prosperous year for Nexon as they achieved an unprecedented full-year revenue of approximately ¥446.2 billion, marking a 5% increase compared to the previous year when considering reported figures, and a 1% rise when accounting for constant currency.
As a passionate gamer, I’ve got to admit that while I appreciate the continued success of MapleStory, Dungeon & Fighter, and FC in driving Nexon’s earnings, my personal favorite, The First Descendant, didn’t quite live up to expectations this time around.

According to Nexon’s Q4 report, the revenue fell short of expectations because there was a decrease in user activity. This drop in users, they suggest, can be attributed to the absence of new content.
It’s worth noting that we don’t have player count statistics for PlayStation and Xbox. However, the decreasing number of players on Steam is clearly evident, as indicated by Steam charts. Initially launched with over 264,860 players, the game saw a significant drop to 63,014 in August, further declining to 15,273 in November. As of February 2025, Valve’s database shows the player count has stabilized around 11,000.
Despite a lower-than-expected number of players, Nexon’s report indicates that the Season 2 Update launched in December has boosted user retention. This strengthens the base for the upcoming release of Season 2’s second episode in March.
Despite falling short of expectations, players can rest assured that TFD isn’t facing an imminent demise. In fact, quite the opposite – during the latest live stream, it was revealed that the development team is expanding and collaborating with other studios.
Furthermore, the newly launched hot spring character skins have been financially successful, prompting Nexon to plan for more frequent skin releases. The upcoming Season 2 Episode 2 is expected to attract many players back in March with the addition of Serena, a new photo mode, and a Labrador named Fellow, among other exciting features.
