On February 16, 2025, the anniversary special SNL50: A Lorne Michaels Production aired. This memorable event was graced by the presence of celebrities like Kenan Thompson, Eddie Murphy, Tom Hanks, Adam Sandler, Pedro Pascal, and numerous others.
Why weren’t Dana Carvey, Bill Hader, and Dan Aykroyd part of SNL50: The Anniversary Special?
Conspicuously absent from the group was Dana Carvey, who starred in seven seasons of Saturday Night Live from 1986 to 1993. He later made frequent appearances on the show during the 2024 presidential election, impersonating Joe Biden and Elon Musk.
According to Variety, Carvey was unable to attend the event because he had a “bad flu.”
Bill Hader, who starred on Saturday Night Live from 2006 to 2013, wasn’t present for SNL50: The Anniversary Special due to a long-standing scheduling issue.
In the meantime, Dan Aykroyd initially became a founding member of Saturday Night Live’s cast, serving with the “Not Primetime-Ready Players” troupe until his departure from the program in 1979.
Aykroyd couldn’t be part of SNL50: The Anniversary Special due to “prior commitments.”
On February 14, 2025, Aykroyd shared on X: “I’m beaming with pride for having been a co-founder of SNL alongside the incredible team from four years ago, half a century back. This broadcast is as significant as the next moon landing! Gathering comedy legends of our time under the patronage of America’s most esteemed showrunner, my boss Lorne Michaels… Wow, it feels like a sacred event!
As reported by Variety, the SNL50: Anniversary Special garnered an impressive viewership of 14.8 million, which represents a significant 202% increase compared to the average audience for episodes during SNL’s 50th season. Notably, this makes it NBC’s most-watched primetime entertainment broadcast since the 2020 Golden Globe Awards.
