Charlie Cox recently discussed how he originally contended for the Foggy Nelson character rather than Matt Murdock in the Netflix “Daredevil” series.
In the forthcoming Marvel Studios project, Daredevil: Reborn, the actor will once again take on the lead character. The announcement for this series was made by Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, at SDCC 2022. Notably, Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio are set to rejoin the cast in their original roles.
Charlie Cox could have been Foggy Nelson instead of Daredevil
Recently, Charlie Cox sat down for a conversation with GQ Magazine where he discussed the circumstances surrounding his casting as Foggy Nelson in the Daredevil television show.
As I reminisced about my career journey following the release of Stardust in 2007, I shared the tale of how I secured the role of Matt Murdock. Cox here, and let me tell you, I was taken aback when my agent called about an audition I’d given for a Netflix show while I was residing in Scotland. The conversation took an exciting turn as they said, “We think you should come to Los Angeles for a screen test.
Following some technical issues preventing further contact with the agent, Cox received information through voicemails that the Daredevil production team had expressed interest in casting him as Foggy Nelson, a role which is Matt Murdock’s best friend and legal partner.
Nevertheless, Charlie Cox revealed that he turned down the proposal to audition for Nelson, stating, “For some unknown reason, having gone through such a powerful experience, I decided, ‘I’ll participate, but I will only read for Matt. I will only read for the main role.’
From 2015 to 2018, Daredevil was a popular show on Netflix featuring Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock and Elden Henson as Foggy. It soon became one of the highest-rated programs on the streaming service. Later, Cox made several appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, he is set to make his main debut in the MCU with Daredevil: Born Again, scheduled for release on March 4, 2025.
