Francis Lawrence on why Constantine 2 with Keanu Reeves has taken so long

Recently, Keanu Reeves and Francis Lawrence had a virtual chat with Josh Horowitz as they celebrated the 20th anniversary of Constantine.

As the conversation on Happy Sad Confused podcast progressed, the guests delved into the making of their movie, with the host prompting them to discuss any upcoming sequel developments around the 42 minute and 50 second mark. Horowitz then inquired if a Constantine 2 script had been selected by Reeves and Lawrence.

Afterward, the director disclosed that they’ve received approval from DC’s senior executives to produce the sequel. He mentioned, “Akiva (Goldsman) is penning it, and Keanu, Akiva, and I have been brainstorming. I believe we have some truly fantastic concepts that we’re incredibly enthusiastic about.” Lawrence emphasized that they are nearly ready with something “practical” regarding Constantine 2. He also mentioned that Constantine 2 will occur outside of James Gunn’s DC Universe and will be connected to the Elseworlds.

Moreover, Francis Lawrence explained why it took 20 years for the sequel to materialize. He stated that numerous obstacles were encountered, mainly due to shifts in studio leadership, referring to both Warner Brothers and DC. He also revealed that because of these changes at the top level, characters like John Constantine have been moved around or “bounced around” within the Dark Universe.

In a different phrasing: Keanu Reeves expressed his eagerness to portray the character created by Akiva and Francis, stating he’s eagerly waiting to do so. Meanwhile, Lawrence didn’t reveal any hints about the sequel but did share that there’s potential for some characters to return.
