It seems as though another sequel to an old favorite movie is being produced by Hollywood’s nostalgia factory – this time it’s “The Goonies” from 1985 that’s getting a follow-up. Warner Bros. has chosen Potsy Ponciroli to write the script, and despite the original film being released over four decades ago, it seems we haven’t quite had our fill of the story about a group of unruly kids on an adventurous treasure hunt.
According to Variety, Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Holly Bario are collaborating with Amblin Entertainment on a new project, alongside Chris Columbus who penned the initial script. Lauren Shuler Donner is slated to serve as executive producer. At this time, no director has been assigned, and specifics about the plot remain vague like One-Eyed Willy’s hidden treasure. The original film, often referred to as a classic, starred Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan, and Martha Plimpton. It successfully earned $125 million globally on an initial budget of $19 million.
Currently, Ke Huy Quan is basking in the success of his Oscar win for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and his role in Marvel’s “Loki”. This month, he can be seen in the movie “Love Hurts”. At the premiere of this film, he addressed the frequent query about a “Goonies” reunion, expressing his desire by saying, “It’s one of the most frequently asked questions in my life. I genuinely hope for it to become a reality.
In a positive spirit, Corey Feldman added, “I can only express that it’s important for us all to gather together. Everyone appears fantastic – Sean included, Josh included, and I must include myself! We’re still here, thriving, and we’re alive. The Goonies never give up…There’s always a chance.
One might fervently wish that the upcoming sequel manages to refine the initial film’s excessive energy and inconsistent mood. As one reviewer on IMDb aptly stated, the original was “too juvenile for adults but too mature for kids.” Maybe Ponciroli can find his way through these treacherous waters and produce a more unified product compared to its predecessor. It’s possible that this time it might be satisfying enough. However, given Hollywood’s history with delayed sequels, I wouldn’t get my hopes too high.
