William Byron wins 2025 Daytona 500 for second time

In the past two extra laps, the 27-year-old stock car racer secured the first position, marking the sixth occasion in the last eight years that the Daytona 500 has gone beyond its scheduled time to determine the winner.

William Byron claimed victory following a dramatic collision among Denny Hamlin, Cole Custer, and Chase Briscoe that unexpectedly paved the path for the eventual champion. With only one lap remaining and Hamlin in front of the race, Briscoe accidentally hit Byron’s car, causing Hamlin to lose control and crash alongside Austin Cindric. Seizing the opportunity, Byron swiftly raced towards the finish line after maneuvering through the chaos left behind by the wreck.

The 500-mile-long race held at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida, experienced not one but two caution periods (yellow flags). The first one was triggered with only 14 laps remaining after a collision involving Ryan Blaney, Joey Logano, and others. In the final stretch, with just five laps left, officials raised the second yellow flag due to Ryan Preece’s No. 60 car careening through a crash site. Furthermore, the race was halted twice due to heavy rainfall.

At the 2025 Daytona 500, US President Donald Trump was present to watch William Byron secure the victory. In an interview with FOX Sports’ Jamie Little about his race experience, Trump commented, “It takes a great deal of bravery to participate in such events. I’ve observed it firsthand, and they truly demonstrate grit – as one might say.
