TechCrunch shares news about DSTLRY developing a novel tool for artists leveraging computational technology. However, it seems this innovation might have ties to the speculative financial markets.
On Tuesday, DSTLRY, a digital comic books marketplace backed by ventures, introduced two new features aimed at personalizing the user experience. The first feature, called Commissioned Digital Remarques, enables artists to draw custom sketches and sign their work on digital comics. The second feature, Unlimited Digital Covers, extends access to a variety of alternate comic book covers across the platform.
Commissioned Digital Remarques allow the classic practice of customizing comics with personalized sketches to move online. At conventions, getting an artist’s sketch or signature is a significant aspect of being a fan. In the comic world, a remarque refers to a small drawing made on a book cover or pages that complements existing artwork. These drawings take less time than creating full character illustrations, yet they are highly prized by collectors.
According to DSTLRY’s perspective, it’s the creators who determine both the cost and delivery time for their works. Just as with books, once a digital comic has been personalized, users can subsequently resell or trade the personalized issues on DSTLRY.
Gosh, it seems that’s the case indeed. If the focus isn’t on acquiring pieces for their intellectual or aesthetic worth, or even displaying them like museum exhibits, then we find ourselves in a market not too different from speculation, which can be quite absurd, perhaps even more so. So, what’s the point of it all then? They’re just making AI look like a jest, and this collector’s craze, where artifacts are bought to be locked away, is only serving to lower the quality of the art world unnecessarily.
It seems that perhaps it’s essential to express a desire for speculators to cease their actions. They’re merely tarnishing the essence of what the medium stands for, and anyone who fails to voice an alternative or constructive opinion might not truly value the medium at all.
