The historic Gracechurch Street Hotel in London has been given a fresh perspective by the acclaimed design studio Holloway Li, artfully merging its 1913 Beaux-Arts elegance with contemporary flair. This hotel was once an HSBC bank and now boasts 203 rooms, taking inspiration from early modernism to create a harmonious fusion of history and contemporary hospitality.

The renovation showcases the architectural grace of the structure through towering Cipollino marble walls, delicately embellished ceilings, and an eye-catching geometric backlit feature. By day, the lobby functions as a shared workspace; by night, it transitions into a social gathering spot, centered around a versatile reception desk that doubles as a coffee bar.

Holloway Li tastefully incorporated unique artisan details throughout the space, such as octagonal brass pendants made by Joe Armitage, a nod to the building’s 1950s Typist Room. The curtain headers echo London’s tailoring tradition, while three large canvases by local artist Elizabeth Power help ground the design in its historical setting.

The guestrooms harmoniously blend past and modern elements, offering versatile furniture suitable for both work and leisure. Remnants of mid-century style are evident through Paolozzi artworks and Carl Hansen chairs, while fluted headboards and sisal rugs infuse a sense of warmth. A desk lamp designed by Joe Armitage, modeled after his grandfather’s 1952 floor lamp, signifies the care taken in crafting this project to perfection.
