The long-awaited initial responses for the movie “Mickey 17,” directed by Bong Joon-ho, are finally out, and they’ve been largely positive. Critics have been lavishing praise on the film as well as the performances of Robert Pattinson and Mark Ruffalo. This science-fiction black comedy follows Mickey Barnes, who signs up to be a disposable clone worker on an expedition to Niflheim, an icy planet. Based on the 2022 novel “Mickey7” by Edward Ashton, this film appears to be quickly earning critical acclaim.
Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 gets raved in first reactions to sci-fi thriller
17, titled Mickey, marks Bong Joon-ho’s first directorial effort since the 2019 release of Parasite. After its recent premiere in London, it has garnered overwhelmingly positive feedback. Critics have largely applauded the South Korean filmmaker for his skillful integration of social commentary, but also praised Robert Pattinson and Mark Ruffalo for delivering outstanding performances that significantly enhance the production.
According to Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes-associated critic Erik Davis, “Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17” is a hilarious must-watch, with Robert Pattinson once again demonstrating his exceptional versatility as an actor. Davis also praised Mark Ruffalo’s performance in the film and concluded by strongly recommending it, especially for those who enjoy intelligent, eccentric sci-fi movies.
Additionally, BJ Colangelo from SlashFilm went so far as to call Mickey 17 a “masterpiece” and “Bong’s finest English-language production yet.” She characterized the film as a “poignant and awkwardly funny exploration of capitalism, colonization, and corruption, featuring an exceptional cast.
Initially, Emily Murray from GamesRadar+ and SFX primarily praised Robert Pattinson’s exceptional acting in Mickey 17. She found Mark Ruffalo’s portrayal of the shady politician particularly captivating as well.
Mickey 17’s enthusiastic initial responses stem from the film’s debut in London, as it is scheduled to be released in American cinemas on March 7, 2025.
