The upcoming Clayface movie by DC Comics is now receiving director pitches; according to Deadline, both Jeff Wadlow and James Watkins are potential contenders for directing this project.
The most recent update indicates that DC Studios will listen to proposals from possible directors within the next week, with Wadlow and Watkins being mentioned as potential candidates for future directing roles. Additionally, Deadline’s report suggests a growing excitement about the start of casting for the film, but this process is unlikely to commence until a director has been chosen and can provide input on the decisions that follow.
Wadlow is primarily recognized for his work in the horror genre with films like “Imaginary” (2024), “Fantasy Island” (2020), and “Truth or Dare” (2018). He has also directed movies such as “Kick-Ass 2” sequel (2013) and “Never Back Down” (2008). More recently, Watkins directed the remake of “Speak No Evil” (2024), along with “Bastille Day” (2016) and “The Woman in Black” (2012).
What do we know about DC’s Clayface movie?
At present, details about the upcoming movie are scarce, but rumors suggest it might fall under the horror-thriller genre, given the list of potential directors under consideration. Notably, the film is being penned by renowned and highly praised writer/director Mike Flanagan.
In Threads, James Gunn referred to Clayface as “a story within the continuity” of his and Peter Safran’s newly established shared DC Universe, which was initiated by the recent launch of the animated Creature Commandos series.
At this point, no formal casting has been revealed for the Clayface film, but it’s important to mention that Alan Tudyk is providing the character’s voice in the Creature Commandos series. Previously, James Gunn indicated that actors who lend their voices to significant animated characters in DC Universe productions may also portray those roles in live-action settings, similar to Frank Grillo, who voices Rick Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos and is expected to appear in the 2025 live-action Superman film.
Furthermore, Gunn clarified that Tudyk will portray a flesh-and-blood character within the DC Universe. Initially, it was unclear which role he was referring to, as Tudyk also provides voices for Doctor Phosphorus, Will Magnus, and Clayface in Creature Commandos.
