But if you’re aiming to play as a Fighter, it’s wise to focus mainly on skills within the Fighter category since they are more beneficial for that role. However, keep in mind that your skill points will be limited throughout the game, so choosing wisely, particularly at the beginning stages, is crucial.

At Level 1, some essential skills to acquire promptly include:

1. Medium and Heavy Armour, crucial for a Fighter, can quickly deplete your stamina without the skill “Armored Grace”. It is recommended to learn this as your second skill after the mandatory initial one.

2. “Constant Recovery”, which allows you to regenerate health, and “Toughness”, which increases your overall health, should also be acquired as soon as possible.

At Level 1, Charging can provide enjoyment, yet it’s not indispensable. Initially, Fighter’s only skill is Charge, but you might consider picking up Minor Missiles from the Wizard skill set early to have at least one spell in your arsenal. Shield Bash is somewhat useful, but Parry in the Ranger skills offers a more effective alternative. Therefore, Parry could be considered a better choice than Shield Bash.

At Level 5, it’s advisable to initially select Brawn first, since it increases the effectiveness of all two-handed weapons. Following this, Bleeding Cuts consistently benefits a Fighter because you primarily use axes or greatswords. Devastating Criticals becomes increasingly valuable as subsequent skills enhance it further. Barbaric Shout is effective for tackling tough challenges, but it’s not as dependable as Brawn. Iron Fists might seem appealing at first, but you’ll soon find yourself moving beyond this skill.

At Level 10, you’ll find only four skills to select, but it’s advisable to overlook Stunning Blows as greatswords are more prevalent than hammers and maces, making it a less strategic choice. Similarly, the damage dealt by Power Jump is highly dependent on specific situations, so it’s not really worth considering. However, Unbreakable (which reduces stamina loss while blocking) and Built to Destroy (which allows you to regenerate health by destroying objects and demolishing breakable walls) are both solid choices, although neither are essential.

As a dedicated fan, I’d highly recommend grabbing the Retribution skill first. It amplifies your damage by 70%, 100%, and finally 120% of the damage you just endured – a perfect fit for a Fighter who thrives on taking hits and dishing them back. This ability harmonizes particularly well with Into The Fray, which draws enemies closer to you. However, its range makes it less essential, though still valuable in certain situations. Reflect is useful, but it’s not an immediate choice for picking up – it’s more of a strategic addition to your skillset.

At Level 20, you only get two skills to choose from. The first one is “Clear Out”, which transforms you into a whirlwind of swords and is an incredible blend of efficiency and style – grab it as soon as possible because it’s both powerful and cool. The second skill is “Inspiring Triumph”. While at Level 20, this skill doesn’t usually help much because your companions aren’t often useful enough for its restoration effect to matter. However, with two points invested in it, it not only restores your companions but also brings them back to life, making it a bit more useful. But generally, it might not be the wisest use of your limited skill points.

At Level 1, I recommend taking Survivalist to enhance food’s healing properties, and Parry for its usefulness in all melee battles. While Survivalist can benefit from an additional point or two, Toughness and Constant Recovery make it unnecessary to invest more than a single point. If you prefer engaging enemies up close, consider raising Parry to two or even three points.

1. Tangleroot seems unnecessary: It lacks the value it promises.

2. Evasive, while useful for maneuvering out of danger, isn’t comparable to Fighter’s blocking and parrying techniques. Therefore, it might be skippable in your skill set.

3. Steady Aim is a worthwhile addition if you anticipate using a secondary arsenal that includes bows or guns. However, it shouldn’t be your top priority.

As a fan, at Level 5, I find myself standing at a crossroads. Marksmanship could be beneficial if my secondary weapon of choice is a bow or firearm, but remember that the majority of points should go towards Fighter skills, so it might be wiser to hold off on this for now. Piercing Thrusts, which enhances daggers, swords (but not greatswords), and spears, is another option, but only if your secondary loadout revolves around one of these weapons. Similarly, Finesse boosting one-handed melee weapons isn’t beneficial for a Fighter unless you plan to switch to that. Shadowing Beyond, while useful in certain quest situations, is less combat-effective. It’s worth considering if you aim to complete every side quest thoroughly, but if your primary goal is to take down enemies, it might not be as essential.

If you plan on focusing on the upgrade and crafting aspects of the game extensively, then scavenging can be beneficial for you. However, you’ll typically discover superior weapons and armor through normal gameplay progression more frequently, so prioritizing scavenging isn’t necessarily crucial.

At level 10, there are only three skills available. If you found Parry particularly beneficial, you might want to explore Arrow Deflection as an alternative. However, it’s not mandatory. Power Slide is entertaining but may not be very practical for a tank-oriented Fighter, especially if you already possess Charge. Quick Switch could be useful if you frequently switch between loadouts, but most Fighters can leave level 10 skills untouched.

At level 15, the excitement might not be as grand as it appears. The skill ‘Bear Ally’ may seem powerful at first glance, but by this point in the game, a summoned bear is less formidable than expected, especially for a high-damage Fighter. While it has its uses, it’s not as thrilling as it initially sounds. Similarly, ‘Sniper’ is effective only against unaware enemies, which may not appeal much to a Fighter. On the other hand, ‘Critical Strike’, which boosts your critical chance by 10%, 15%, and eventually 20%, is definitely a skill worth acquiring if you’ve invested in Devastating Criticals.

At Level 20, you’ll find only two distinct choices. The Staggering Shot ability is exclusive to characters with a bow or gun as their secondary weapon loadout, but at this level it’s advisable not to allocate too many skill points to your secondary choice. On the contrary, Flurry of Blows is extremely beneficial, particularly if your primary weapon seems too cumbersome or sluggish. Investing two skill points in Flurry of Blows for the lifesteal feature could prove to be quite valuable.

Since skill points are limited, it’s typically not beneficial for a Fighter to allocate points towards spells.

It’s advisable to acquire one skill set, particularly Minor Missiles at Level 1 since it stands out as the most effective among the mandatory starting skills. However, once you obtain a Grimoire of Elements, Fan of Flames (also available at Level 1) becomes the superior choice due to its area-of-effect damage over time. Generally speaking, the optimal Fighter build tends to forego spellcasting in favor of focusing on other critical aspects.

If you carry a wand as your secondary loadout, Level 5 offers some valuable skills to consider. The skill ‘Wand Mastery’, which grants a 25% boost (increasing to 40% and then 50%), is recommended, but only if you intend to frequently use the wand. Additionally, you might want to put points into either ‘Blast’ or ‘Bounce’ to enhance your wand’s powerful attacks. Considering the congested nature of Avowed’s battles, ‘Blast’ would be a more advantageous choice. However, there are no other Wizard skills that are worth investing in if you’re playing as a Fighter.
