I’d be a nervous wreck, but Monster Hunter Wilds’ producer is ‘very confident’ following up Capcom’s bestselling game ever

About a year ago, veteran Monster Hunter producer Ryozo Tsujimoto marked some significant series achievements, with one particularly impressive figure: 23 million. This was the number of copies of Monster Hunter: World that Capcom had sold by early 2024, a total that includes sales from the game’s expansion, Iceborne. If you check Capcom’s official website where they track their best-selling games, World has added another 5 million sales since then, bringing the total to an astounding 28 million copies! This makes Monster Hunter: World Capcom’s most successful game in its 42-year history.

It’s hard to comprehend the enormous sum Capcom stands to earn from Monster Hunter Wilds sales, considering factors like platform cuts, physical distribution costs, and currency conversions. Regardless of the exact figure, it’s a number so large that one might pause to count the zeros, which suggests an overwhelming amount of pressure that could keep even me awake at night, sweating in anxiety.

Tsujimoto, evidently, is made of sturdier stuff than I am.

Tsujimoto didn’t appear to be exaggerating when he said he felt confident about Wilds’ launch.

The PC release of Monster Hunter World happened later, and crossplay wasn’t an option. As a result, there were certain gameplay and system aspects we couldn’t explore in World. These limitations influenced our development of Monster Hunter Wilds, where we prioritized addressing those issues from the get-go to create a more advanced Monster Hunter title. The environment in Monster Hunter Wilds has evolved from that of Monster Hunter: World, and we believe we’ve successfully addressed all elements we felt were necessary with this new game. We are confident.

As a thrilled gamer, it feels like Wilds is all set for an epic debut on PC. At this moment, it’s nestled comfortably in the top five of global bestsellers on Steam, trailing only Civilization 7 and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 that are currently playable. Remarkably, it’s the most wished-for game on Steam altogether, surpassing the much-anticipated Hollow Knight: Silksong with over 340,000 wishlists, as per SteamDB.

It’ll take huge sales on consoles and PC, though, to give Wilds a shot at World’s crown.
