In today’s era, numerous game enthusiasts criticize the extended length of new game titles, often dissuading them from reaching the final credits. This was my experience with Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, among others. However, Ondrej Bittner, a member of Warhorse Studios, contends that it isn’t the duration of the game, but the personal experiences that matter. In an interview with GamesRadar+, this senior designer of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 describes their latest production by the Czechs as a “hardcore” title, yet one that is also quite accessible.
Mainly, Bittner advocates for the enlarged gameplay dynamics featured in the recent installments of Henry’s adventures. He contends that these additions hold player interest, distinguishing Kingdom Come 2 from less varied games.
In essence, Ondrej Bittner explained that he believes the intricacies you’re discussing – which lead to a more complex gaming experience – revolve around the idea that players are starting to understand that game length isn’t necessarily crucial. What truly matters is whether each play session offers unique experiences. If a game spans 150 hours but all sessions feel identical, it can lead to boredom. More complex mechanics equate to more distinct content, as stated by Ondrej Bittner in his interview with GamesRadar+.
The lead designer of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 cites Elden Ring as an example, finding its mechanics to be straightforward yet boasting vast exploration opportunities and numerous hidden gems. This blend of simplicity and depth gives the game a distinctive personality, and such titles often contribute positively to the gaming industry.
While this game might not appeal to everyone’s tastes, it was designed with a balance in mind. For instance, Bittner found the combat in FromSoftware’s title too challenging, but Warhorse Studios aimed to cater to both hardcore gamers and those who prefer less demanding experiences with KCD 2. As Bittner himself put it, “though the game may present challenges, there is always an alternative route to success”.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 was released on February 4th this year on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X.
