Together with Legendary Entertainment, Hasbro Entertainment is developing an extensive Magic: The Gathering universe that spans both movies and TV series. This project starts by adapting the game into a full-length movie.
Magic: The Gathering, originally launched by Wizards of the Coast in 1993, paved the way as the first popular trading card game. In the 90s, it became a global phenomenon, finding its place within schoolyard games and giving birth to specialized conventions. The acquisition of Wizards of the Coast by Hasbro in 1999 corresponded with the game attracting an impressive player base of 50 million, largely due to its compelling characters and complex mechanics.
Mary Parent, the chairperson of worldwide production at Legendary, showed her enthusiasm about the partnership by saying, “We take great pride in being careful guardians of unique, cherished intellectual properties, and there’s no property more fitting for this description than ‘Magic: The Gathering.’ We look forward to developing a multi-media universe that will captivate longtime fans while also drawing in new ones.
Legendary Entertainment has an impressive history, turning well-known brands into franchises like Godzilla vs Kong and Dune, which span both film and television mediums. Moreover, they’re part of the Netflix’s Enola Holmes series and are producing the upcoming Minecraft movie, featuring Jason Momoa and backed by Warner Bros.
Previously, Hasbro managed to secure a “Magic: The Gathering” television series with Netflix, with Terry Matalas (from “Star Trek: Picard”) as the lead writer. However, an earlier attempt by 20th Century Fox to establish a cinematic universe didn’t succeed, despite producer Simon Kinberg’s involvement.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled about this dynamic collaboration, merging one of the world’s most recognized brands with a potent and successful manager. Magic: The Gathering has fueled decades of intriguing world-creation and imaginative storytelling, making it a flawless fit for Legendary’s versatile strategy towards top-tier IP. I can’t wait to collaborate with them in crafting a fresh, expansive Magic: The Gathering universe!
