Over the last year, the application of AI in movies has emerged as a significant topic in Hollywood. Most recently, the film “A Complete Unknown” produced by Searchlight Pictures, has admitted to employing AI to some extent.
What type of AI did A Complete Unknown use?
In a recent Variety report, various Best Picture-nominated films that employed AI were highlighted, and it was revealed that the Motion Picture Academy is considering making it mandatory to disclose such use. Notably, Searchlight admitted to utilizing the machine learning tools provided by Rising Sun Pictures (an Australian company) for their film, specifically their Revize technology.
On their website, the company describes the AI they use as being employed for a range of digital enhancements, particularly face replacement, facial expression alteration, de-aging, body swaps, and other likeness adjustments. As per Searchlight, this same AI was utilized in transforming several stunt performers to resemble actor Timothée Chalamet more closely.
In response to your query, a representative from the company stated that the technology was employed for three quick, wide-angle shots featuring a motorcycle. It’s important to note that this technology is frequently utilized in filmmaking to make stunt performers visually resemble their acting counterparts, rather than enhancing performance or creativity. For these particular shots, the VFX team applied this technique as a tool for the artists, a method often used for many years in the industry, known as VFX stunt face replacement.
The report also calls attention to other movies employing AI in their making, such as Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Dune: Part Two, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and The Brutalist. Notably, The Brutalist utilized AI for editing the Hungarian language within the film.

The report mentions a few more films using AI during their production like Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Dune: Part Two, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and The Brutalist. This last one used AI to handle the Hungarian language editing within the movie.
As a gamer putting on my film critic hat, I’m not quite sure if AI technology has been a game-changer or a game-ender for movies vying for awards. Variety reports that the Academy currently offers optional forms for AI disclosure, but with the increasing popularity of AI, they are seriously considering making it mandatory starting from 2026.
