The Flash, Constantine Video Games Were Canceled by WB Games

There’s been some speculation about what exactly WB Games Montreal has been developing lately, given they released Gotham Knights in 2022, which garnered mixed reception at launch. Since then, they’ve kept a low profile for more than two years, leading many to wonder why. A recent report hints that two of their games featuring DC characters, The Flash and Constantine, may have been canceled.

The Flash video game was canceled due to Ezra Miller movie’s flop

Based on a recent report by Jason Schreier from Bloomberg, WB Games Montreal presented an idea for a game starring John Constantine, Hellblazer. Although senior management showed interest in this fresh concept, it failed to take flight due to budget and schedule concerns that didn’t align with the executives’ preferences.

Originally, there was a proposal for a game centered around the comic book character John Constantine, famously portrayed by Keanu Reeves in the 2005 movie. When my team, headed by Ben Bell as vice president of production, first heard about it, we were thrilled with the concept. However, when it came to securing budget and timeline approvals, they remained ambiguous, as per sources privy to our plans.

Initially, WB Games’ Vice President of Production Ben Bell proposed bringing characters The Flash and Joker to the big screen, with their respective films set for release in 2023 and 2024. However, the Montreal studio opted for The Flash, only to see the project abandoned due to the movie’s lackluster performance at the box office.

Following several periods of indecision, Bell proposed that they should shift focus towards a game centered around a more well-known character such as the Joker or the Flash. Schreier stated, “They decided to proceed with the speedster superhero,” but in 2023, Warner Bros. launched Flash, an expensive film featuring Ezra Miller, which failed at the box office. Consequently, the planned video game has been abandoned.

Since then, WB Games Montreal has contributed to various projects, one of which is Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. As per recent reports, the studio is now developing a proposal for a video game set in the renowned Game of Thrones series by George R.R. Martin.
