Following the airing of episode 4 from the series “Paradise,” which left viewers stunned, the creator of the show, Dan Fogelman, has shared insights as to why he chose to eliminate Jon Beavers’ character, Billy Pace, early in the storyline. Debuting on small screens in January 2025, the series has already captivated audiences with its distinctive narrative structure, intricate plot, and complex characters over the course of four episodes. However, an unexpected turn of events sees Billy meet his demise in episode 4, causing quite a stir among viewers. More recently, Fogelman has addressed fan queries by explaining the reasoning behind Billy’s untimely death.

Dan Fogelman explains how he decided to kill off Billy in Paradise Episode 4

In the course of creating the initial script for Paradise, the well-known screenwriter/producer initially didn’t plan on eliminating Jon Beavers’ character Billy Pace. However, the impactful surprise of terminating such a crucial character eventually persuaded Dan Fogelman to take a daring move.

As a gamer, I sat down one day to craft the pilot for “Only Murders in the Building,” not entirely sure where the story would lead. But as I wrote, I found myself becoming enamored with both the character and the actor portraying him. Then, an unexpected thought struck me: what if we were to kill off this beloved character? It’d be quite a shock, especially since my goal was to make the audience grow fond of him in that very episode, so they wouldn’t see it coming.

In Episode 4 of Paradise, Sterling K. Brown’s character, Xavier, discovers that his companion has been keeping a disturbing secret hidden. Meanwhile, even though the former president Cal Bradford had warned not to trust Billy Pace, he doesn’t get the chance to hear the truth from Billy before the latter tragically dies after ingesting poison.
