In the late 1970s, Richmond began his career as an African-American news anchor for a prominent television station (KTVU), starting off as a part-time clerk typist. By 1976, he had climbed up the ranks to become the main anchor. He continued in this role until 2008 when, just before his 65th birthday, he chose to retire from KTVU.
Distinguished by his composed and commanding demeanor, he significantly impacted the media scene of the San Francisco Bay Area, reporting on significant incidents like the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and the 1991 Oakland Hills fire disaster.
