For some time now, teasers for “The Last of Us Season 2″ have been released, featuring Kaitlyn Dever’s character, Abby. In the upcoming season, Abby will make her debut. You might recognize her from “The Last of Us Part II”, a game that forms the basis of this series. In that game, she is portrayed as a strong and formidable character, whose strength plays a significant role in the storyline. However, in a recent interview, creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin revealed that Dever did not gain muscle specifically for her role and offered explanations behind this decision.
Neil Druckmann on why Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby isn’t buff in The Last of Us Season 2
In a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin shed some light on why Kaitlyn Dever didn’t beef up for her role as Abby in The Last of Us Part II. According to Druckmann, during the casting process, it was all about nailing the performance rather than any other factor. He emphasized that they were seeking an actor who could truly embody the characters we know and love. Looks-wise, while it’s not completely ignored, it takes a backseat to a whole host of other factors we consider when casting.
Druckmann emphasized that it would have been challenging to find another actress as talented as Dever, who could convincingly handle various physical elements. He explained that while physical strength was less crucial in this version of the story due to a reduced emphasis on violent action sequences, it remains focused more on dramatic scenes. However, he clarified that there is still some action, but the approach and priorities are different compared to previous versions.
As stated by Mazin, the actress’s role within the production provided a remarkable chance for them to explore a character who might be physically less robust than the Abby from the game, yet possesses a spirit that’s even more resilient.
In April 2025, you can expect the release of Season 2 for The Last of Us. This new season is set five years following the events of the first one and seems to be based on selected portions from The Last of Us Part II game.
