I, as a supporter of the legacy of Joseph Shuster, am sharing that his estate has taken legal action against the upcoming Superman film directed by James Gunn. You see, alongside Jerry Siegel, Shuster was one of the original creators of this iconic character. The lawsuit alleges that Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Comics lack the rights to distribute the movie in specific regions, such as Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Australia.
This situation arises because certain countries’ copyright laws return the rights to the creator’s heirs 25 years after their demise. Since Shuster passed away in 1992, his estate believes they now hold the rights in these areas. Warner Bros., however, disagrees with the validity of this lawsuit and is ready to defend its stance in court.
The estate is petitioning the court to issue a stop-and-stop order on the distribution of the film in those regions, and they’re also requesting a trial by jury.
