As a passionate admirer, I’d like to share that “Love Me” is an intriguing post-apocalyptic movie that revolves around a heartwarming love story between non-human characters, set in a future where human life has ceased to exist. In this unique narrative, the talented Kristen Stewart portrays a drifting buoy bobbing in the ocean, while Steven Yeun captivates as a satellite orbiting our beloved Earth. Recently, both actors shared insights about their roles in this groundbreaking debut feature from directors Sam and Andy Zuchero.
Kristen Stewart and Steven Yeun discuss how Love Me explores humanity through a buoy and a satellite
Kristen Stewart and Steven Yeun discussed how the movie “Love Me” explores human issues through non-human characters. In this film, a weather buoy taps into a satellite’s vast memory bank and discovers a social media celebrity named Deja and her spouse, Liam. Consequently, it develops a persona called “Me,” and starts addressing the satellite as “Iam.
Stewart expressed that there’s a shared bond connecting everyone, even those who seem incredibly different or distant. To her, the buoy in the series represents this very essence of herself, as her character is named ‘Me’. Essentially, she emphasizes that she can only embody herself in this role.
In the intriguing sci-fi series Love Me, the main characters are used to delve into complex themes such as self-awareness, personality, and more typically human qualities. This isn’t achieved by giving them human traits, but rather by emphasizing their ability to think. During an interview, Yeun expressed that he wasn’t sure if the satellite was sentient, then commented, “I ponder… I didn’t spend too much time contemplating it. If anything, the shooting process itself was enlightening as it progressed. And I’m not certain if I gained insight into what consciousness and awareness are from that perspective, but at first, I believed this satellite was purely functional. It flourishes in being [strictly] ‘functional.’
As stated by Yeun, the buoy’s appearance within the satellite’s orbit significantly contributes to its ability to break free from stagnation and experience liberation instead.
2024 saw the global debut of “Love Me” at the Sundance Film Festival on January 19th. It was later shown in cinemas across the United States starting from January 31, 2025.
