Bethesda Game Studios, known for creating “The Elder Scrolls,” dabbled again with the concept of procedural generation for their game Starfield. This technique was used to construct its vast planets, but the results were somewhat varied. Procedurally generated content has both advantages and disadvantages, but OnceLost, developers of “The Wayward Realms,” are optimistic about using it effectively in their upcoming title, which is a successor to Daggerfall.
In a Reddit discussion following an article on gamers switching to more intricate role-playing games, Victor Villarreal from The Wayward Realms production team shared his thoughts on how Bethesda’s upcoming game, Starfield, might have tarnished the reputation of modern procedural generation in gaming.
Did Starfield hurt ProcGen’s image?
In a conversation on the Elder Scrolls subreddit, Villarreal shared that the process of generating game environments (procedural generation) has significantly advanced since the times of Daggerfall. Back in the late 90s, games struggled, but the developers of The Wayward Realms think the technology is now capable of creating well-structured narratives within a procedurally generated setting.
Nevertheless, the creative producer of this game feels it shouldn’t be categorized alongside contemporary titles like Starfield due to significant differences in their approaches. While Starfield boasts many admirable qualities, it didn’t leverage procedural generation as effectively as games such as The Wayward Realms and even Daggerfall did.
Villarreal clarified, “Daggerfall is one of my all-time favorite games and it’s my top choice among the TES series. However, Starfield doesn’t resemble Daggerfall in any way. Although both have vast open worlds that can seem ‘barren’, the emptiness in Daggerfall was a result of technological constraints, not design choices. Bethesda has repeatedly emphasized that these planets, or at least most of them, were intended to appear empty.
In addition to an open-world gameplay experience that unfolds procedurally, The Wayward Realms will offer procedurally generated dungeons to ensure a unique experience for each playthrough. Some players have raised concerns about this feature, but Villarreal points out that procedural dungeon generation has significantly improved over time. Many popular games, like Dead Cells and The Binding of Isaac, make effective use of procedurally generated dungeons (often referred to as ProcGen dungeons).
They pointed out that incorporating procedurally generated dungeons could have enhanced the game’s diversity, replayability, and overall appeal. However, they acknowledged that their use of procedural generation has drawn criticism, as people assume that our capabilities are limited to what was demonstrated in Starfield. This belief arises because many games don’t leverage procedural generation, and those that do often fail to capitalize on its potential benefits. They expressed hope that they could persuade skeptics, but acknowledged it would be a challenging task.
