In a chilling yet tranquil future, a tech entrepreneur named Karsh (Vincent Cassel) has invented software that allows the mourning to observe their deceased loved ones’ gradual decomposition. According to Janus Films’ description, as Karsh grapples with the loss of his wife to cancer and embarks on an unusual romantic relationship with his wife’s sister (also played by Diane Kruger), incidents of vandalized graves involving his ‘shroud’ technology start threatening his business. This leads him to uncover a possible wide-ranging conspiracy. Written after the death of its director’s spouse, David Cronenberg‘s latest film, The Shrouds, serves as a deeply introspective exploration of grief and a journey into a dystopian world filled with self-driving cars, data breaches, and AI assistants. The Shrouds offers the usual blend of darkness and humor from Cronenberg, providing a smart and thought-provoking examination of the body, technology, mortality, and infinity.
David Cronenberg’s upcoming film, “The Shrouds,” will mark his return to directing since the release of “Crimes of the Future” in 2022. He is widely recognized for creating movies like “Shivers” from 1975, “Scanners” and “Videodrome” both from 1980, “The Dead Zone” from 1983, “The Fly” from 1986, “Dead Ringers” from 1988, “Crash” from 1996, “A History of Violence” from 2005, and “Cosmopolis” from 2012, among others.
