Officially, Sony has taken down (or requested removal of) a 60fps modification for Bloodborne that enabled the popular soul-like game to operate at faster frame rates on advanced equipment.
As an enthusiast, I’ve been eagerly following the development of a fan-created patch designed to boost the frame rate on enhanced PlayStation consoles like the PS4 Pro, PS5, and now the hypothetical PS5 Pro. This mod, initially introduced within certain emulated versions of the game, was meant for personal use only on modified systems and emulators. However, despite its innocuous nature, Sony chose to remove it from circulation via a legal takedown notice.
Sony kills Bloodborne 60fps mod
Four years after its release, Lance McDonald, the creator of the patch, announced that Sony Interactive Entertainment had issued a DMCA takedown notice regarding the publicly available content.
On February 21st, 2021, the skillful modder shared with fans on Twitter that he had developed and shared a modification for Bloodborne, improving the game’s frame rate to 60fps. However, today, Sony Interactive Entertainment sent him a DMCA takedown notice requesting he remove the links to the patch he posted online, which he has now done.
For those in-the-know gamers, the 60fps patch for the widely-played Soulslike game has never been hidden knowledge. Following its launch in 2021, numerous articles and tutorial videos on this topic emerged, with Digital Foundry even providing a comprehensive analysis.
Indeed, the creator Lance McDonald has highlighted that the mod was not only recognized but also acknowledged by former Sony Entertainment Interactive (SEI) President Shuhei Yoshida.
In October 2024, McDonald posted on Twitter that they had met [Yoshida] and shared with him their work of creating modifications for PlayStation games. Yoshida responded with an “oh!”, and when McDonald mentioned they had created the 60fps mod for Bloodborne, he erupted in laughter. It was a pleasure to meet such a wonderful person like him.
Or, more informally:
In October 2024, McDonald tweeted about meeting [Yoshida] and telling him they create mods for PlayStation games. Yoshida seemed excited and laughed when McDonald mentioned the 60fps mod for Bloodborne. It was great to meet such a cool person!
It was great running into @yosp! When I told him I create modifications for PlayStation games, he showed some excitement with an “Oh!” Then, I mentioned I developed the 60fps mod for Bloodborne, and he erupted in laughter. What a delightful individual!

Despite enthusiastic calls for a remastered version, PC port, or even a framerate unlock patch for the game on updated hardware, Sony has yet to respond to these demands. For many players, this patch was the ideal way to enhance an already outstanding game, but now it can only be experienced through questionable forum posts and backups.
