Funcom’s MMO titled Dune Awakening is set to transport gamers into the harsh desert environment of Arakis by the end of this year. Yet, it appears that the launch date for this anticipated MMORPG remains fluid, causing some uncertainty among enthusiastic players.
Dune Awakening devs play coy with release date
According to an interview with Eurogamer, Funcom has hinted that the game’s projected “early 2025” launch date should be viewed as flexible rather than exact. Although the game is expected to come out within this timeframe, Funcom prefers not to specify a precise schedule for its release.
In response to an inquiry, Dune Awakening’s executive producer Scott Junior explained that the term “early” can be interpreted flexibly. He suggested that the beginning of 2025, or the first six months, could potentially be considered “early,” but ultimately left the final decision open.
As the release date for Dune: Awakening approaches, an outlet had a chat with the producer about how the game will be monetized. Unlike games like World of Warcraft, Dune: Awakening won’t be free-to-play or require a subscription fee. Instead, players will have to pay a one-time cost to play the game initially, and they might also need to shell out extra cash for any expansions that get released later on.
Junior made it clear that we’ll reveal our monetization approach around the time of launch, but he assured us there won’t be any subscription model involved. He also added that Dune: Awakening won’t be a free-to-play game, implying it will likely have a premium price tag.
Once Dune: Awakening eventually goes live this year, it’ll debut as a complete game on PC. Post-launch, expect regular updates enriching the storyline and offering new quests. A console version is also planned, though there might be hurdles in optimizing the game to run smoothly on Xbox Series S.
Although specific release details are scarce at this point, it’s evident that Funcom is dedicating significant resources to ensure the game has a successful launch. Yet, we can only wait and see if it ultimately debuts in a satisfactory condition.
