Recently, I’ve noticed that several significant Reddit communities have prohibited sharing links to the Twitter platform acquired by Elon Musk, going as far as banning screenshots too. This decision appears to be a response to an action taken by Musk – he made a gesture that seemed like a Hitler salute during the swearing-in ceremony of the U.S. President Trump.
No more Twitter on Reddit
Indeed, there were repercussions from this action. Prior to his acquisition of Twitter, Elon Musk was often the subject of criticism. Nowadays, several prominent Reddit communities, such as the German r/de subreddit and numerous sports and gaming subreddits, have decided to prohibit links to Musk’s platform.
Opinions on Twitter’s ban are split among users. Some view it as a positive move, either due to the difficulty they often encounter when dealing with Twitter links, or because, as a user in the Baldur’s Gate 3 Subreddit puts it, “This is fantastic news! I’m thrilled to hear it. There are many contentious issues in life, but an appropriate response to Elon’s salute isn’t one of them.
Some people believe the next logical move should involve prohibiting connections to multi-purpose platforms like Instagram and Facebook.
Some argue that the ban lacks logic since Twitter frequently serves as the main source of information for many. A user from r/nfl puts it: “This is going to eliminate around 90% of our subreddit’s posts, I wonder how the actual NFL will react. Kudos to you for standing up against fascism though.
They think the ban is unnecessary because it doesn’t address the issue effectively and appears more like an empty gesture.
As a dedicated fan, I’ve come across discussions in certain Reddit communities where Bluesky is proposed as an alternative. Interestingly enough, this platform traces its roots back to a decentralized network project by Twitter, which makes it structurally reminiscent of X. However, unlike the current scenario, Musk is not involved here.
