Billy Crystal & Meg Ryan Return in When Harry Met Sally-Themed Super Bowl Ad

In the wake of the Super Bowl two weeks past, advertisements for this grand event are gradually appearing, such as one from Hellmann’s mayonnaise featuring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan revisiting the site of their famous When Harry Met Sally encounter.

What happens in the Super Bowl ad?

As I sit down at Katz’s Deli, New York City’s timeless icon, I find myself once again slipping into the shoes of Harry Burns. Across the table, there’s Crystal, playing Sally Albright. We’re enjoying a sandwich, and as Ryan smears some creamy Hellmann’s mayo on his, he puts on quite the dramatic show, just like old times. I can’t help but chuckle as Billy jokes, “You know, that’s the real stuff!

This week’s commercial premiere took place at Katz’s Deli, where the director of the ad, Jake Szymanski, mentioned that it was the first time the two actors returned to the location since they filmed the movie there back in 1989.

Szymanski stated through THR, “Both of them mentioned they hadn’t returned to Katz’s since filming the scene, which made our timing perfect. We were there when they both stepped onto the set again, a sight not seen for several years. As they walked in, memories came rushing back, prompting them to recall and share stories about that day’s filming.

In this advertisement, Sydney Sweeney appears momentarily and delivers the iconic phrase “I’ll have what she’s having,” wrapping up the commercial. Szymanski explains that given Sweeney’s rising fame in romantic comedies, it was fitting for her to be featured.

Initially, there were discussions about who would play the cameo role and who would deliver the memorable line that concludes the scene. This iconic quote is from When Harry Met Sally, a well-known romantic comedy, and it’s significant for Meg, naturally, as we are replicating this moment. I find it intriguing that Sydney is becoming a new star in romantic comedies… so I think it’s symbolic that she would be the one to end the scene, almost like a symbolic handover of the torch from one generation to the next, passing the mantle to the upcoming talent.
