Transitioning a fast-paced first-person shooter like Turbo Overkill from PC to console can be challenging, as even the most skilled players may struggle to achieve the same speed and precision with a controller compared to using a mouse and keyboard. However, Trigger Happy Interactive, with Apogee Entertainment publishing, has managed this transition effectively without compromising on the game’s overall quality. The Turbo Overkill PS5 edition offers the same fast-paced gunplay that fans of this stylish cyberpunk shooter have come to expect.
In Turbo Overkill, the initial scenes leave a strong impact due to the introduction of our hero, Johnny Turbo, who sports a chainsaw leg. Though it might not be ideal in everyday life, in the game, this unique feature enables swift ground sliding and enemy decimation via your very own chainsaw. This not only enhances your mobility but also turns it into a lethal tool, as your arsenal of weapons grows to over 15 throughout the campaign. Additionally, this feature encourages an aggressive playstyle, allowing you to charge towards enemies rather than always fleeing from them, effectively turning yourself into a deadly lawnmower.
My initial concern with the Turbo Overkill PS5 port was that controlling the game using a controller might be challenging. However, I found this wasn’t an issue thanks to the game’s clever use of aim assist. This feature effectively walks the tightrope between being extremely helpful without being overbearing or making the game feel less skill-based. It’s a delicate balance that is often hard to achieve in shooter games, but here it works seamlessly as an essential option to ensure smooth gameplay.
As a gamer, let me tell you, the mobility in this game is unmatched – it’s like being Spider-Man himself! I find myself swinging through levels with my grappling hook, and running up walls just as easily. It’s been years since Titanfall gave me such thrilling movement experiences in an FPS game. This isn’t your grandpa’s shooter – it’s a game that’s pushing the boundaries of the genre, not stuck in the past like many retro-inspired indie games I love. Plus, you get to customize yourself with various augmentations and upgrades, transforming you into an ultimate battle machine over time.
Turbo Overkill PS5 offers plenty of repeat play value. It features five difficulty settings for the campaign to challenge your skills, along with hidden levels, an infinite mode, and an arcade mode. The latter two modes incorporate a scoring system, making it a game that rewards you for investing more time in it.
Turbo Overkill PS5 Review: Final Verdict
The Turbo Overkill PS5 adaptation delivers one of the top first-person shooters from recent times to consoles, offering an excellent presentation. The game maintains its pace, inviting you to glide, swing, and blast your way past swarms of adversaries with a grin on your face. It’s a fashionable and gory adventure that fully exploits its cyberpunk setting.
SCORE: 8.5/10
According to ComingSoon’s review guidelines, a rating of 8.5 is equivalent to “Excellent”. Although it has a few small flaws, this rating signifies that the artwork achieves its purpose effectively and makes a lasting impression.
