Originally devised to reconcile the varied endings in Daggerfall within Morrowind, Dragon Breaks represent chaotic moments when all possible timelines coexist, leading to fragmented history, contradictory texts, and worldwide bewilderment.
Ted Peterson, one of the creators of The Elder Scrolls series and responsible for games like Arena, Daggerfall, and in-game books for Morrowind, isn’t fond of the concept of Dragon Breaks. This element of lore is a contentious topic among fans, who either love it or dislike it intensely. Peterson contends that the device used to justify player choices is considered “frivolous” by him.

In an upcoming VideoGamer Podcast episode, Peterson expresses his appreciation towards the idea of Dragon Breaks in Elder Scrolls, but he feels that the concept has been excessively employed. Over the history of the fictional universe, there have been five significant Dragon Breaks, which raises concern that it might be a convenient device for writers to rely on.
Peterson clarified that he doesn’t enjoy “The Dragon Break.” He appreciates the concept but finds it frequently misused as an excuse for illogical or unexpected changes, stating, “It’s like saying, ‘Oh, gee, it’s just a Dragon Break!’
As a dedicated Elder Scrolls gamer, I’ve always been intrigued by the enigmatic concept of Dragon Breaks, but it seems that the creators have been cautious about exploring this topic too deeply, perhaps because of the complexities and potential messiness when not handled with great care. In-game, we’ve encountered Time Wounds – tiny rips in time’s fabric – but translating the intricate essence of Dragon Breaks into a game while preserving their weighty lore descriptions appears to be a daunting task.
Currently, Ted Peterson is still developing his much-awaited game, The Wayward Realms, which appears to not include a feature similar to Dragon Breaks. This upcoming RPG is designed to recapture the open-ended design of The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, and based on its appearance, it’s shaping up quite nicely.
