Oh, the joys of institutional investors demanding more data! FTSE Russell, the darling of the London Stock Exchange Group, is taking its indexing business on a wild ride into the world of digital assets and on-chain data. Why, you ask? Well, because cryptocurrency insights are all the rage these days, especially among those with deep pockets.
Kristen Mierzwa, FTSE Russell’s head of digital assets, might have hinted at the company’s unique institutional clientele, making this move a no-brainer. After all, who wouldn’t want to serve their clients better?
A little birdie told Cointelegraph that “institutional investors are asking for more data and information [on cryptocurrencies] than in previous years.” So here we are, swimming in the crypto sea, thanks to FTSE Russell’s announcement.
FTSE Russell isn’t going it alone, of course. They’ve partnered with blockchain data provider SonarX to develop fundamentally weighted crypto indexes using on-chain metrics and market data. Because, you know, regular crypto indexes just aren’t peculiar enough.
Institutional Adoption: The Gift That Keeps on Giving
FTSE Russell’s foray into crypto is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to traditional finance embracing digital assets. Bloomberg Terminal added over 50 digital assets in 2022, and FTSE partnered with Grayscale in 2023 to launch an index series covering cryptocurrencies and smart contract platforms.
The rapid institutional adoption of crypto might have something to do with this trend. Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) launched a year ago and have already attracted over $120 billion in assets under management. Who can resist such a party?
As we gear up for 2024, FTSE Russell’s crypto dive is just one of many signs that traditional finance is embracing digital assets. With SonarX by its side, FTSE Russell is ready to meet the needs of institutional investors and contribute to the ever-evolving crypto industry. Buckle up, folks!
