Apologies are due, I guess that’s me – Oscar-nominated actress Fernanda Torres. Back in 2008, I took part in a Brazilian TV show, and unfortunately, I wore blackface for a skit. I want to make it clear now, it was wrong, and I deeply regret my actions then.
What did Fernanda Torres say about her blackface?
In 2008, the actress who won the Golden Globe for Best Dramatic Performance by an Actress (for her role in the critically praised movie “I’m Still Here”) made an appearance on the Brazilian TV program called Fantastico.
In the questioned drawing, Torres took on various characters for a scene depicting a couple bickering over household chores. Regrettably, during her portrayal of a maid, she wore blackface makeup.
Torres expressed her desire to discuss the issue in a statement, noting that at the time the program was broadcasted, Brazilian culture wasn’t fully aware of the “racist past and significance” associated with blackface.
Approximately twenty years ago, I performed a comedy sketch wearing blackface on a Brazilian television program. I deeply regret this action. I am making this statement to address it promptly, as I want to alleviate any further pain and confusion that may arise. At the time, despite the efforts of Black movements and organizations, the understanding of the racially charged history and significance of blackface was not widely recognized in mainstream Brazilian society.
Due to enhanced cultural sensitivity and significant, albeit incomplete, progress this century, it’s unequivocally clear that blackface is never tolerated. This is a crucial discussion we should persistently engage in to avoid the normalization of racist behaviors – both past and present. As an artist and global citizen, I am vigilant and dedicated to fostering necessary changes for a world devoid of inequality and racism.
