Latest ‘Superman’ Spot Provides New Clips, but Fails to Impress

Yesterday, a fresh TV advertisement unveiled for the forthcoming Superman movie emerged, offering a glimpse of some fresh scenes from the James Gunn-led production. This 30-second ad was premiered during NFL football on Sunday and primarily consists of footage reminiscent of the initial trailer, yet includes three additional sequences. These new snippets show Lex Luthor (played by Nicholas Hoult) and Ultraman exiting a helicopter, depict the Fortress of Solitude’s crystals in motion, and feature Superman (David Corenswet) soaring through rock formations, executing a barrel roll before approaching the camera.

Take a look.

In a statement, Gunn shared that they drew inspiration from the film “Top Gun: Maverick”, and while many assumed this would relate to the variation of John Williams’ “Superman Theme”, it seems to be portrayed differently in the Superman flying scene shown in the footage. This could possibly be the sole positive aspect of the trailer.

One frequently debated element of the trailer is the ‘uncanny valley’ effect, where a CGI character appears almost human but falls short in some way. Some viewers have pointed out that Superman’s face doesn’t look like Corenswet, leading to questions about DC’s choices regarding the CGI. Critics noticed distortions in the character’s facial features, and some went as far as saying his eyes seemed mismatched. Social media reactions were swift and severe, with fans using platforms like X to express their disapproval, often labeling the CGI as “awful” or “terrible.

Instead of this $300 million Superman advertisement appearing impressive, it seems more like an underwhelming production to many viewers. The question arises as to why there’s so much commotion between Snyder supporters and critics.

It seemed that everyone was pleased about receiving this fresh development, with Snyder not being a part of it anymore… But, what went wrong? 😱👻

The newly introduced Superman, regrettably, falls short on looks. Some of the most promising movie moments seem to be teased in trailers. This isn’t exactly reassuring. #NewSuperman

The trailer for James Gunn’s Superman movie looks like an insurance commercial.

I’ll maintain a positive outlook, but that Superman preview on television seems more like a Super Bowl commercial rather than a genuine movie teaser.

I recently watched the latest trailer for the upcoming Superman movie helmed by director James Gunn, who has faced allegations of inappropriate behavior.

HARD PASS.

Why does Superman look so weak in this trailer? James Gunn about to spoil DC even more. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Not hating but this looks horrible. A Superman parody.

Feedback varied from astonishment over the poor quality of the special effects to open mockery, with certain spectators even drawing parallels to the graphics of a basic video game character. Overall, it seemed that there was a strong agreement that the computer-generated imagery required substantial upgrading.

What do you think? Superman will be in theaters on July 11th.
