Sega renews trademark for Skies of Arcadia

Over the past few years, Sega has been actively reinvesting into intellectual properties that haven’t received much attention for decades. A recent trademark filing suggests that the classic role-playing game Skies of Arcadia could be part of this revival effort. Sega recently renewed the trademark, sparking speculation about their plans for this cherished intellectual property.

According to Final Weapon’s report on Chizai Watch, Sega has re-registered the trademark for Skies of Arcadia (known as Eternal Arcadia in Japan) on January 16, 2025. This registration became public knowledge on January 24. This renewal grants Sega control over the Skies of Arcadia intellectual property until it needs to be renewed again or if they decide to sell it.

It’s quite remarkable to point out, particularly considering Sega’s recent commitment to reviving old franchises. For instance, Super Monkey Ball continues to thrive with games like Banana Rumble, a fresh Virtua Fighter is being developed, there are rumors of a new Crazy Taxi MMO, and a Golden Axe TV series is allegedly in production at Comedy Central. On the other hand, despite numerous fans clamoring for a remaster, remake, or port to modern platforms, Skies of Arcadia remains tied to its original Dreamcast launch.

We’re crossing our fingers that the renewal of the Skies of Arcadia trademark signifies more than mere property preservation, and should there be any new updates, rest assured you’ll find them discussed right here on Shacknews.
