It appears there’s a significant change ahead for the much-anticipated movie about Michael Jackson, as recent updates indicate that significant re-filming may be necessary due to a lingering legal matter.
What is the legal issue behind the Michael Jackson movie?
As per Matthew Belloni’s latest report from Puck newsletter, it was decided by Michael Jackson’s estate years prior to the production of his biopic that the Chandler family would not be involved in any movie or project related to the star. Belloni highlights that a legally binding agreement exists between the families, which prevents the Chandlers, who were key figures in the high-profile trial accusing Jackson of child molestation, from being portrayed in any dramatic retelling.
The concern about the Michael Jackson film, as mentioned in the newsletter, lies in the fact that a substantial part of the third act of the proposed biopic on the music icon centers around the well-known lawsuit filed by Jordan Chandler, a 13-year-old at the time, who accused Jackson of sexual misconduct.
The report states that the movie portrays Michael Jackson as being innocent during these events, and one scene shows him meeting with his legal team while also hearing an audio recording of Evan Chandler’s father vowing to ruin Jackson’s professional life.
In some cases, it might become necessary for the studio to re-film certain scenes entirely because the original footage is no longer usable.
The report continues by explaining that the revelation about the payments emerged following the HBO documentary “Leaving Neverland”. More precisely, an article published in September by the Financial Times disclosed that John Branca, one of Michael Jackson’s estate managers, distributed $16.5 million to the individuals portrayed in the documentary as accusers. One of these individuals then demanded an extra $213 million, which led to a legal dispute with Jackson’s estate.
As per Puck’s newsletter, everyone involved with the film was taken aback because they didn’t realize any such payments were being made. It wasn’t until after the entire production was finished that Branca allegedly informed the team about the legal complications linked to the movie scenes.
The creative team responsible for the film is currently pondering over the best approach to rectify the problem at hand. A revised script and potential re-filming scenes will require approval from Lionsgate, while it’s said that Jackson’s estate will cover any costs associated with reshoots and further photography.
