In the latest Star Trek installment titled “Star Trek: Section 31,” fans are speculating about its position within the series timeline. This movie brings back Michelle Yeoh as Emperor Philipa Georgiou, a character first seen in “Star Trek: Discovery.” She now becomes part of Section 31, an undercover Starfleet unit known for employing questionable methods to safeguard the United Federation of Planets. Throughout the story, Georgiou deals with the consequences of her past actions.
So when is Section 31 set in the Star Trek timeline? Here is your answer.
When is Section 31 set in the Star Trek timeline?
There is no official confirmation of when Star Trek: Section 31 is set in the timeline.
The movie takes place during a specific era, referred to as the Lost Era. This period covers the years between the initial Star Trek movies and Star Trek: The Next Generation. By recognizing Rachel Garrett’s character in both Section 31 and Star Trek: The Next Generation, we can make an educated guess about the series’ timeframe placement.
In Star Trek: The Next Generation, Captain Garrett, from U.S.S. Enterprise-C, is approximately 50 years old at the time of her demise in the year 2344. This age matches that of actress Tricia O’Neil, who was born in 1945 and playing a character around mid-forties in the series.
In Star Trek: Section 31, it’s stated that she is approximately 30 years old, aligning with actress Kacey Rohl’s age of 33. This implies that the series takes place about 20 years before her death in 2344.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that Garrett holds the rank of lieutenant in the series, and she doesn’t become a captain until 2332, as per Star Trek canon. Moreover, her promotion from lieutenant to commanding officer occurs in 2328. Therefore, we can infer that Section 31 takes place between the years 2324 and 2326, during the time when Garrett was still serving as a lieutenant.
In this version: Olatunde Osunsanmi was the one who led the film production based on a script penned by Craig Sweeny. Apart from Michelle Yeoh and Kacey Rohl, the cast includes Omari Hardwick, Sam Richardson, Sven Ruygrok, Robert Kazinsky, Humberly González, and James Hiroyuki Liao.
