Susana Polo from Polygon called it the “oddest Star Trek film ever produced.” She went on to say that it’s bursting with concepts typically reserved for a full TV series. Although there are elements that feel reminiscent of classic Star Trek, some aspects veer quite far from the franchise’s established path. Polo wasn’t too fond of its condensed format, suggesting that all these innovative ideas could have benefited from more time or space to fully unfold.

In simpler terms, IGN described the movie as “a waste of 100 minutes filled with common and uninspired content that barely resembles Star Trek.” The review pointed out its deviation from the franchise’s core values, such as lack of exploration, positivity, and thoughtful substance. Empire Magazine criticized Section 31 as a disappointing farewell for a formerly admirable character, specifically Philippa Georgiou’s role in it.

According to Robert Lloyd from the Los Angeles Times, the movie seemed like it was initially intended for television, as many aspects suggested a pilot episode. He noted, “Section 31 appears to scream ‘pilot episode’…it seems the film is hesitant to abandon its aspiration of becoming a TV series.” Critics concurred that the movie suffered from underdeveloped characters and a disjointed narrative, which made it less compelling.
