On January 20th, the social media platform user known as Sexyy Red (real name Janae Wherry) shared a re-post featuring an artificial intelligence-created picture that paired her with Martin Luther King Jr.
Initially, there was a picture that has since been taken down, where the well-known rapper and prominent leader were depicted with their hands clasped and gazing at one another. Additionally, Red posted another edited image where she appeared alongside King Jr., in the historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
In simpler terms, Bernice King, Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughter, expressed that the post was deliberately offensive, dishonorable, appalling, disrespectful towards her family, particularly her father who can’t defend himself because he was tragically assassinated. She added that her father dedicated his life to fighting for civil rights, human rights, and ending war and poverty, and the “SkeeYee” rapper should remove the post.
Red quickly issued an apology on X, saying, “You’re right, I didn’t mean to show disrespect towards your family. My sincere apologies.” Red also explained that she had shared something without realizing it could be considered inappropriate, as she believed it to be innocent at the time.
In the same post, King expressed not only her thoughts but also provided specific details about her worries regarding the image. She further empathized, “I sincerely hope that people can envision the pain of having their deceased, murdered father used for campaign materials, unjust laws, and so on. Wishing you all the best, young lady.
Significantly, Bernice King is the youngest offspring of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King. Currently, she holds the position of CEO at The King Center, a non-profit organization.
